Students march in a procession for Hispanic Heritage Month

Blessed Sacrament School in Westminster recently celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a joyful day filled with faith, food, music and cultural traditions. The school community honored the Virgen de Guadalupe with a procession, enjoyed pan dulce and Mexican hot chocolate, watched ballet folklórico performances, cheered on teachers in a hot salsa contest and celebrated with a piñata. The event brought students, families and staff together to celebrate Hispanic culture and foster a deeper appreciation for the traditions that make their community unique.

For parent Mr. Octavio, the celebration encouraged cultural understanding and appreciation.

“It was a great event. It exposed the school community to a different culture and it helps them appreciate and understand different traditions.”

Ms. Miriam, a staff member, emphasized how sharing traditions strengthens the school community.

“These shared experiences create a sense of belonging for everyone involved. Coming together reflects our shared values of love, respect and unity.”

For Ms. Julia, the celebration held special meaning as a Mexican-American educator.

“Being able to celebrate a part of my heritage with my school community was truly special. One of my favorite moments was watching the folklórico dancers, especially a student of mine sharing her culture and traditions with our school. It was a beautiful reminder of how important it is to celebrate our heritage and create opportunities for students to share the cultures that make them who they are.”

Students also appreciated the opportunity to learn about different cultures. Nathan shared:

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a great celebration to build diversity/community bonding in our school. My favorite part about it is all of the festivities and food.”

Grace enjoyed discovering new traditions, saying, “I liked learning about their culture, their food and dances. I love their dances.”

The celebration reflected the importance of building a welcoming school community where students can share their heritage, learn from one another and grow in the Catholic values of love, respect and unity.
